Waipawa Needs Makeover

The Central Hawkes Bay Council should not turn its back on Waipawa after turning down a funding proposal  from those interested in a more perky image.

Waipawa used to be a bustling little village with a great Friday late night  but has been through the ups and downs of other Hawkes Bay towns . With the economy picking up and more development taking place around Waipawa and Otane it is time the redevelopment of the town was looked at seriously. What to do with the main street would be a good start .Maybe they need a competition to flush out some imaginative ideas about tackling this one.

Somehow the residents need to use the railway and the traffic flow to there advantage .Suggestions please.

High Seas Again

With the sea cutting up rough again the question of beach erosion at Te Awanga and Haumoana rises as sure as the tide. Years ago there a groin was constructed off the beach at Haumoana and it worked. The sea had already claimed 25 metres of coast at that point and the groin certainly made an impact. The question now is if more are built who pays and how much does a groin cost in todays terms. This area of coastline probably needs a few groins to be totally effective and that will only protect a certain number of properties. If it is going to cost millions then it would be a huge impost on local residents.

Some ratepayers are questioning whether the gravel extraction at Awatoto is depriving the beach of nourishment and robbing shingle from the Tuki tuki river.  What is now known is that the earthquake of 1931 was responsible for altering the whole level of the Heretaunga Plains and thus the fall in the rivers. The Tukituki ,once capable of carrying barges to Patangata is now shallow as a bird bath and it appears this could be as a consequence of the great 1931 earth tremmor. If this is a quirk of nature, then we have to live with the fact that the Tuki will not be able to deliver shingle to the sea and we can’t do anything about it.

Nature always has the last say.
