The effect of rating on high priced coastal properties is far reaching.A sleepy little settlement like Porangahau is reeling from the effects of the latest rate increases from the Central Hawkes Bay District Council .It does not seem fair that coastal areas such as this are on the receiving end of the great coastal crush.Ratepayers that have been living quietly for years and many on fixed incomes or retired,  have been jolted awake by new valuations and associated rate increases.It is always difficult for revolts to work as the Council always has the power to overcome but it will again bring to the fore the issue of how rates are gathered and the mess that has been created by the current rating methods.Good luck and this is one to watch.
