Beach Highway

Recent publicity covering tragic accidents on some of New Zealands beaches should make lawmakers sit up and contemplate the silly situation we have regarding vehicles on beaches and speed limits that are too high and impossible to police.
In recent years we have seen the four wheel drive vehicle being used in a way never contemplated at the time legislation was passed and the growth in use of quad bikes  on beaches has been astronomical.
It was good to use a bike to access fishing spots with a quiet toddle along the shore. Now the game has changed. The idiots have arrived and the beach is fair game to recreate ride and ruin. Nothing and nobody is safe anymore.
The new generation are not worried about the fragile coastal environment or the relaxing atmosphere it is for some.
It is time to have a look at speed limits and vehicle access to beaches  and save our wonderful playground for just that…….playing.
