Clamour for Power
The crazy super city idea for Auckland is bringing out the power hungry pollies around the country and Wellington is getting a working over about amalgamation from the likes of the Dominion Post who seem to have an agenda on this one.
Predictably we now have the Hastings Mayor jumping into the fray with a pitch for a Unitary Authority in Hawkes Bay.
This is purely an attempt to get hands on the Port and the Regional Council income as Hastings has made such a botch-up over the years and ended up with a huge debt.
Napier City are well in control of their affairs and I cannot see Napier people wanting to flirt with Hastings DC’s debt.
The Regional Council have lost their way and half the councillors don’t know what they are there for.
It is to be hoped the only way this annual argument can be resolved is by referendum.Otherwise all the hard work done by past regional council members will be down the drain.
